2023 OCEANIC TOUR
Last Summer Atlanticus embarked upon our month-long Oceanic Tour which featured the premiere of a multi-media work entitled "Oceanic," a contemplation of the oceans with themes of wildlife diversity, sustainability, and the effects of pollution in conjunction with the UNESCO Decade of the Oceans. The tour was supported by Arts Council England.
We were thrilled to present this new 5-part suite and its timely themes at grassroots jazz venues, clubs, theatres and schools across the UK. The tour also highlighted material from our new album Upstream and debut recording Blue Haven. As is now custom, the band went straight into the studio at the end of the tour to record Oceanic and a few fan favorites from over the years.

"Our planet is defined by its ocean, and therefore so are we. We cannot afford to speak of the ocean as though it is simple or empty or worthless. We have to see this dynamic engine as a critical part of our existing planetary life support, in whose shadow we are privileged to live. Instead of seeing the ocean as a "solution" for climate change, we need to see it as a test of a new attitude to our planet, one that doesn't treat it as a combination of universal rubbish bin and, exploitable resource. Ask not what the ocean can do for you, but what you can do for the ocean."
Upstream released on June 22!

Replicating the successful formula employed in capturing the energy and live vibe of our debut album Blue Haven, ATLANTICUS hit the studio at the end of our 2022 summer tour and recorded all 10 tracks for Upstream in a single day.
This album has an all-original program of tunes by Peter and Terry, featuring the angular funk of the title track, the hypnotic and montuno-infused "The Mentalist," the cool choro of "Underway," and the lush ballad "Ivory, Bone and Gold." Also included are hard-swinging audience favorites like "Three for Le" and "John's Trip," plus the Gershwin meets Go-Go "Rhythm Schtick" that we been playing since some of their first gigs together.
Upstream is available on Bandcamp and all major streaming services.

Jazz Across the Pond
ATLANTICUS is a unique British-American musical partnership bringing together two powerfully distinct musical personalities to explore their common interest in the rich transatlantic heritage of jazz.
Steeped in Tradition, Looking Forward
ATLANTICUS draws from the storied tradition of the great Hammond organ groups, with a post-modern sound echoing the ground-breaking organ quartet of Larry Young’s 'Unity' album. The music is mostly original, spanning a stylistic spectrum from the hard bop blowout of the album's title track 'Blue Haven', the modal explorations of 'That's What', the odd-metered boogaloo of 'Swank', and an Afro-Cuban reimagining of the Bobby Timmons classic 'Moanin''.
Instant Connection, Dynamic Performances
Peter and Terry were introduced through a mutual friend and first teamed up for a short UK tour in 2016, recruiting Brighton heavyweights trumpeter Jack Kendon and drummer Milo Fell to round out the lineup. From the very first gig, their immediate and natural musical rapport sealed the transatlantic bonds for what has now become ATLANTICUS. The band delivered exciting high-energy performances to delighted crowds, culminating in a head-turning performance at the Love Supreme festival. Building on that success, the quartet convened once again in the summer of 2018 for a 20-date, month-long tour of the southern UK, playing clubs and festivals from London to Wales. ATLANTICUS has since undertaken month-long UK tours in 2022 and 2023.
Touring and Recording
By the end of their 2018 tour, the band knew it was imperative to go in the studio and document their remarkable chemistry. The result was Blue Haven, featuring nine original compositions by Peter and Terry along with invigorating arrangements of two classic standards. The entire album was recorded in a single day, capturing the vibe, excitement, and groove of the group's live performances. Replicating that successful formula, ATLANTICUS has recorded a new album at the end of each successive tour: 2023’s Upstream and the forthcoming Oceanic, featuring a 5-part multimedia suite, the creation of which was supported through Arts Council England. A fall 2024 US tour in support of Oceanic is booked, with plans for a summer UK tour underway for 2025.
“Kendon blows his socks off… Fraize is blistering on tenor… this is the perfect Hammond/horn band setting.”
- Lance Liddle, Bebop Spoken Here
"Sixty-plus minutes of arresting music as blues-charged as it is harmonically literate, Blue Haven is one hell of an album from the striking Anglo-American quartet..."
- Michael Tucker, Jazz Journal
"Blue Haven is a highly enjoyable release, one that finds Atlanticus invigorating the jazz tradition with surprises and consistently inventive ideas."
- Scott Yanow, jazz journalist/historian
